In this show, Brazilian born artist Gustavo Sousa explores his formative engagement with ceramics, as a child in Sao Paulo.
From an early age, Sousa was exposed to the materials and fabrics of ceramics through his mother’s employment at an art supply shop. Given the material and occasionally stealing the clay and ink, Sousa allowed his creativity to develop through experimentation with the tangible creation and decoration of the materials.
Revisiting these media today has resurrected Sousa’s passion to again achieve the openness of engagement through the decoration of ceramics. Using simple, often naïve brushstrokes he creates abstract forms which occasionally reveal human-like figures and masks – like the dark fantasy images of a childs imagination. The freeness of his expression is enchanting, solidified by the stark monochromatic palate of the work, which marks a single un re-worked moment of creation.
